SLICE Week Two June 25-29 2007
Chippewa Broadway Association,
Restoring Froggy Park is Just a Hop Away
Another great week of SLICE (St. Louis Interfaith Community Explorations) was spent restoring Froggy Park at the corner of Chippewa and Oregon. 19 volunteers from Chiminade College Preparatory High School and MICDS, worked to help restore Froggy Park. Volunteers helped pull the weeds, clear debris and designated area for plant beds. This productive week was cut short due to the torrential down pour that came while in the middle of mulching the plant beds. It was a great start to get the park in great shape once again for the neighborhood to enjoy. Thank you to all the volunteers for all your hard work! Special thanks to Betty Moore, President of the Chippewa Broadway Business Association (CBBA) and Sarah Bliss Vice-President of the CBBA.

SLICE Week One June 11-15
City of Kinloch, Over 70 Volunteers Equals High Success
During the first week of SLICE (St. Louis Interfaith Community Explorations) FBW had over 70 volunteers representing four different groups. The groups that participated came from Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, Chaminade College Preparatory High School, Jewish Community Relations Council and First Congregational United Church of Christ from Colorado. This group of Volunteers planned and facilitated a summer camp for the children in the Kinloch community. The volunteers created games such as kickball, basketball and relay races. Also, they held stations such as arts and crafts, face painting and chalk drawing. The community youth enjoyed themselves so much they didn't’t want the volunteers to leave at the end of the day. Each day of SLICE , volunteers were treated to a home cooked lunch prepared by Kenny Black and Mayor Keith Conway at the Kinloch Café . Thank you to all of the volunteers who truly showed the campers what it means to put your faith into action! Special thanks to the St. Louis County Parks Department, Felicia Pulliam-Jones from the City of Kinloch, Bobbie Small, Kenny Black, Mayor Keith Conway and Alder woman Marshall.

Youth Choir Arrives in Masses from Alabama on a Mystery Trip to the City of Kinloch
Over 100 youth volunteers from Asbury United Methodist Church Christ Church came out to the City of Kinloch on June 4, 2007, from Alabama. This youth choir was on a mystery trip where only the adult sponsors knew the destination and tasks ahead during their week in St. Louis. For their day of service, the youth choir worked in three different teams. The first group worked in the local daycare, cleaning out the closets and getting rid of old broken toys and cots that were no longer useable. The volunteers also had a chance to play with the children at the center and made such an impact that the children did not want the volunteers to leave! Group two worked to clean up the park where Faith Beyond Walls SLICE will hold summer camp and an annual back to school health fair. The third group helped move and organize old abandoned tires. After moving over 2,000 muddy tires, the third group was hosed down the City of Kinloch Fire Department. A homemade lunch was prepared by the Kinloch Church of God for all of our volunteers! To show their appreciation for a wonderful day of service and mouth-watering lunch the youth choir sang a few songs before heading out on their next adventure. Thank you to all of our hardworking volunteers! Special thank you to the Kinloch Church of God, Mayor Keith Conway, the City of Kinloch Fire Department and Felicia Pulliam-Jones for such a wonderful day!

Chaminade Students tackle Social Justice and Poverty Issues.
Through out the semester students from Chaminade College Preparatory have been discussing and learning about social justice. They have been exploring ways in which social justice issues impact their community as well as those outside their community. There were many local speakers who spoke to the students about social justice and the cycle of poverty. After the discussions the student were split into groups and given an opportunity experience though role play living in real poverty. They soon found out that breaking the cycle of poverty was harder than they had thought. Thank you to the faculty at Chaminade for allowing FBW to help with this unique learning opportunity. Also special thanks to Howard LeRight, Mr. Williams, Ms. Johnson, Bobbie Small and Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr.
